Sometimes we tend to ask ourselves the value of culture, in this article we are going to talk about the diverse tapestry of human culture.
The most common definition of culture we learned when we were in high school is “culture is a complete way of life” this is the definition of culture students learn when they are in high school.
But when they finish high school, they realize that are so many definitions of culture and get confused.
The topic of culture is very broad and I am going to elaborate on it.
Culture:
The word culture comes from the word “culture” which has to do with a spiritual lineup in the universe. In french, culture originated from “colored” meaning “till the ground”. Many words can stand for culture. For example, the word “cult” goes along with “cultism”, members of this group share common values, ideas, norms, and laws.
So what is culture? In other words, culture “is the standards of people living within a geographical area”
Here are some definitions of culture by some philosophers.
According to Morin:
“Culture is information assets consisting of knowledge, skills, rules, and standards specific to a company. Culture learned, learns, is retransmitted, and reproduces itself from generation to generation. It is not written in the genes, but rather in the mind-brain of humans. ”
Arendt:
“Mass society is not culture but recreation”
Culture deals with beliefs, religion, customs, food, arts, and laws. The way people live in an area can differ entirely from the way some people live. For example in Africa, they have a different way of living (culture) compare to those staying in Europe.
So now that you know what culture is and its definitions by some philosophers, it is very important to know and understand the different types of culture. Below are some types of culture you need to know.
Elite culture
This is also known as high culture. This type of culture is related to high elder members of society with a certain ranking position. This is usually connected to music, hunting, shooting, art, etc.
This type of culture is related to the historical, philosophical, and intellectual values of the society
Subculture
This type of culture is different from the wide culture. This is the culture that is only enjoyed by the members of society. This type of culture clearly shows the different norms, art, and laws of some social groups from the culture of different people. for example, in Nigeria, the Yoruba people practice a certain type of traditional marriage and they shared a common interest that differs entirely from the Fulani people.
Global Culture
As the name implies global culture is the type of culture that covers the whole world, this is when a certain type of culture influences another part of the world. This culture is mortmain by some features such as beliefs, norms, ideas, customs, and laws. A very good example of global culture is the influence of languages. For example, the English language is now a global means of passing information. Countries that don’t speak English are now learning English.
Popular Culture
I am sure you already figured out this type of culture. As the name implies, this is a general culture that each member of a social group or society enjoys. These people are sharing common Ideas, beliefs, customs, etc. This culture keeps, protects, and monitors the activities of people living within a geographical area.
